TRIP TO BANDON
The Pacific Northwest has always felt like home to me, woven deeply into my family’s story across generations. Its rugged coastline reminds me of western Scotland, where my grandmother’s family lived for centuries—perhaps that connection is in my DNA. Or maybe it’s because my mother was born in Northern California, and my grandfather began his medical career with an internship and residency in cities throughout the Pacific Northwest. It could also be the time I spent stationed for training at Alameda Air Station, living on Treasure Island with sweeping views of the San Francisco skyline from my windows.
Whatever the reason, this region has always stirred something familiar and comforting in me, as if I’m returning to a place I’ve known all along.
Over time, this stretch of coastline became even more meaningful. Dave and I started a tradition on our fifth anniversary: driving north along the Pacific Coast Highway, beginning at Pebble Beach and winding our way up the coast. We turned that five-year ritual into a family adventure when Lauren graduated high school, embarking on an unforgettable two-week journey from Pebble Beach to Vancouver.
It was during that trip that Dave arranged to stay at the hidden gem of Bandon Dunes—an extraordinary golf destination nestled on the southern Oregon coast. We stayed in luxury cabins at the resort, and while Dave and Jordan golfed, Lauren and I explored the area, even horseback riding along the beach. It was pure magic.
We knew we’d be back—but Bandon’s secret didn’t stay secret for long. When Dave finally was able to secure tee times, the resort was fully booked. That left me with the challenge of finding us somewhere to stay in this remote, rugged corner of the Oregon coast. With the nearest commercial airport over two hours away in Eugene, and Bandon’s tiny population of just 3,000, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
Luckily, I found a little beachside retreat—a small one-bedroom with a deck that opened up to a stunning coastline dotted with sea stacks. While I missed the luxury of the resort, I fell completely in love with this stretch of wild, untamed beach. I greeted every sunrise with a warm cup of coffee and ended each day marveling at the fiery sunsets over the Pacific.
I hope you’ll enjoy this glimpse into our time in Bandon by the Sea—a place that now holds a piece of my heart.
